Our mission at Writers Rebel is to motivate writers not only to write about the climate emergency, but to get their work into the world and begin to enrage, engage and inspire readers. Because in order to navigate the crisis and change the business-as-usual narrative of our politicians and mainstream media, we need first to describe it, and imagine what forms it can take. Fiction has always played a role in shifting paradigms, and in exploring issues that can spark rage, hope and inspiration alike.
The winning story in our new competition will be published on the website alongside the top shortlisted stories, and showcased in our weekly newsletter and on our social media.
As you know, Writers Rebel is run by volunteers, so there is no entry fee to this competition, and no cash prize – but this is a chance to participate in the rebellion and be a part of the movement. Writers, we need you to use your voice to empower the rebellion.
Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Power
These five prompts are jumping-off points for your stories exploring any aspect of the climate and ecological emergency. While digging into the complexities of the crisis now, try writing from your feelings, as Melissa Gismondi discusses in her recent blog post for us. If looking ahead, feel free to imagine a future where we do make the urgent system changes we need to, and also where we do not. We also encourage writers to think about the intersections of climate, social and racial justice in their stories–for instance the ongoing impacts of colonialism, wealth extraction and oppression.
Great flash fiction has a narrative shape, with not only an idea or conflict but also some sort of narrative resolution.
