We Believe

As writers and citizens, we have a duty to tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency, and to galvanise actions to address it.

Writers Rebel uses the power of words to claim a safer, fairer future for all the planet’s inhabitants – human and non-human.

We celebrate and encourage writing that challenges damaging systems, champions coming generations, and envisions alternative futures.

By engaging with our fellow world citizens in the regenerative system of XR, we bring literature into the service of life.

Accountabilities

We undertake to tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency and act accordingly.

We move towards making our own and our country’s carbon emissions net zero by 2025.

We open dialogues with our audiences, readers, writers and literary professionals, and plan high-impact literary events and productions to advance XR’s three demands, in line with XR’s 10 principles.

We ensure that all our public appearances and conversations make clear the urgency of radical and rapid change. Even where our work does not address the climate crisis directly, we use our public platforms to spread awareness, and encourage creative and dynamic ways to approach our common, global problem, the climate and ecological emergency.

We apply XR’s regenerative culture to support and heal readers, writers and literary professionals.

Internal Mandate

As part of Extinction Rebellion we resolve to:

Tell the truth and act on the basis of that truth. Even if our work does not address the climate crisis itself, we will endeavour to use our public platforms to promote knowledge of the climate and biodiversity crisis.

Make moves towards making our own and our country’s carbon emission net zero as soon as possible. We undertake to take measures to reduce our own carbon footprint and support XR to change government policy.

Support a citizen’s assembly to debate the policy decisions the UK needs to take to address the biodiversity crisis
