In Almost Invisible Angels, Jay Griffiths & Sir Mark Rylance speak out in praise of insects. Original score composed & performed by Sam Lee & Anna Phoebe.

“They do not take the title of angels, being by nature bashful and unassuming, they go by other names – firefly, bee, ant, caddisfly – I wish that everyone who said they believed in angels, would actually believe in insects.”

To mark the Royal Entomological Society’s Insect Week, Writers Rebel launched a stunning short film by environmental writer Jay Griffiths and artist-activist Gaby Solly, drawing attention to crashing insect populations across the globe.

Spoken by Sir Mark Rylance and filmed in the ruins of Tintern Abbey, Almost Invisible Angels shows people re-connecting with the tiny creatures that form a threatened link in the food chains we all depend on.

Griffiths’ message that “Insects are – truly – the angels” celebrates the bounty that insects bring to us daily and almost invisibly, and urges us to cherish them.

An original score composed and performed by folk-singer, and Music Declares Emergency activist, Sam Lee, and violinist Anna Phoebe, echoes the deep grief and poignant hope present in Rylance’s powerful narration.
